Commission discusses airfield capacity, tanker logistics and wildfire response

County commissioners devoted an extended portion of their July 21 meeting to wildfire response logistics and airfield capacity after recent local fires.

Chair (speaker 1) opened the exchange by asking staff about airport operations and whether the county's airfield could support larger airframes. Economic development and tourism director Eric Walquist (speaker 2) noted the role of nearby water sources in aerial suppression, saying, "We got a reservoir of endless water," and described helicopter runs to Staneker Reservoir and Red Fleet during the Grizzly Fire response. Commissioners and staff discussed fuel runs to Vernal and the operational limits of tanker aircraft and helitankers staging from Hill.

Commission members emphasized trade-offs between building larger, reinforced pavement and the cost and funding hurdles that would accompany such upgrades. One member recalled a past large fire, noting "That was 22,000 acres" to illustrate resource needs during major incidents. Discussion included the possibility of reestablishing a heliport at Dutch John and whether investments to support firefighting would also serve increasing tourism charter traffic.

The meeting did not produce a formal funding decision; commissioners framed this as a planning and funding question that would require further analysis and potential coordination with federal and state partners. The commission recessed later for a municipal building authority meeting before returning to routine business.
