Nemaha County ends one jail food contract, awards new meal contract and authorizes radios and digital forensics sharing

County minutes show several operational changes for the Nemaha County Jail in 2013. On March 13 the board approved Rachel Rieger’s request to be released from her food-service contract because the average inmate meal counts had fallen; the board terminated her contract effective April 30, 2013 and authorized advertising for new bids. On April 10, after a bid window, the board tabled awards until April 24; on May 8 the board awarded a one-year contract to Darling’s Café to provide jail meals beginning May 1, 2013 at rates recorded in the minutes (breakfast $5.95; lunch and supper $6.25 per meal per inmate).
Separately, the sheriff requested updated communications equipment. In June the board authorized purchase of 10 vehicle radios and one base radio for the jail (total $57,336.75) and approved an interlocal agreement to purchase a UFED digital forensics unit (Cellebrite) to be cost-shared among five jurisdictions; Otoe County would order equipment and other counties would reimburse their share ($1,866.80 each for the UFED and $599.80 each for the first-year maintenance in the recorded motion). The minutes also record a vendor vending agreement (Smith Vending) with 0% commission to the county for jail vending machines.
