Committee hears year-long professional development focused on engagement, reading and special education supports

The Lisbon School Committee heard a summary of professional development work spanning all district buildings, with a primary focus on student engagement. Staff noted that middle-school PD concentrated on attendance and connection through the BAR program (Building Assets, Reducing Risks), while the high school worked with experiential-classroom founder Jen Stanchfield to co-teach model lessons and debrief strategies.
"They focused on engagement, and at the 3 different schools it meant different things," the presenter said. She listed multiple strands: Reveal pilot in 8th-grade math, Wonders reading adoption and correlated vocabulary/word-work PD, in-house teacher-led Thursday strands (courageous leadership, math fluency, behavior), and targeted training for special-education techs on autism and augmentative and alternative communication devices.
Committee members responded positively to the breadth of training and noted the link between engagement work and some of the student well-being concerns raised later in the meeting. Staff said PD choices are tied to school growth goals and will continue to guide next year's priorities.
