Higher Heights initiative announces job fair Oct. 16, aims to connect residents with 50 DOT openings

Camille Walton, deputy director of Cornerstone Community Development Corporation and co-chair of the Higher Heights workforce subcommittee, presented the initiative to the board and urged trustees to promote the effort to residents.
"The main 3 areas of focus are workforce development, access to healthy foods, and access to health care," Walton said. She told the board the first Higher Heights job fair will be held on October 16 at Prairie State College and that the Department of Transportation had indicated it would bring about 50 positions to the fair. Walton said the program includes free training information for residents who lack licensing and offered to arrange transportation if enough interest from Ford Heights residents is shown.
Why it matters: The initiative is aimed at local workforce participation and connecting residents — including people with prior convictions — to training and hiring opportunities. Trustees were asked to publicize the event to reach residents and local businesses.
