Council adopts UFA fireworks restriction map and approves a blank WUI map for Magna

Magna City Council adopted an annual fireworks restriction map prepared with the Unified Fire Authority (UFA) and also approved staff’s recommendation to adopt a blank Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) map after reviewing the state dataset. City Attorney Nathan Bracken explained that under state law the city may adopt a fireworks-restriction map for areas the fire marshal identifies as high risk and that the adopted map must be submitted to the county by May 1.
"Under state law, Magna has the ability to prohibit fireworks in certain areas of the city subject to...the fire marshal telling us which areas are at risk for fire," Bracken said, describing the statutory process and the need to revisit the map annually. Planning staff explained the WUI system uses Structure Exposure Scores (SES) from 1 to 8 and that scores of 7 and 8 are typically used by cities to define high-risk WUI areas; Magna has no 7–8 areas, and planning recommended a blank map for now.
Council approved both actions: adopting the fireworks-restriction map for the year and directing staff to prepare the adopting ordinance and required documentation for the mayor’s signature. Staff noted related state and insurance reporting requirements and said Magna will monitor forthcoming CWS agreement templates and potential legislative changes.
