Magna staff and consultants introduced a 'walking loops' initiative aimed at promoting downtown walkability and increasing foot traffic for local businesses. Interim long-range planning manager Matthew Starley and consultant Tim Sullivan described a coordinated package of postcards, sidewalk decals with QR links, temporary pop-up benches and wayfinding that would orient visitors to the historic district and local assets.
"Walking loops is essentially about getting people out to walk more in their communities," Tim Sullivan said in the presentation. The project would also link to a website and could include temporary pedestrian improvements that might later become permanent if successful; staff indicated they hope to have initial materials and decals installed in time for July 4 events. City staff will complete postcard design, finalize signage and coordinate with code enforcement for any installations.
Council asked for opportunities to provide design input and for a clear list of temporary vs. permanent elements prior to installation.
