Residents press Kannapolis to investigate recurring Brookdale flooding after homes, rescue calls

Several Kannapolis residents urged the City Council to investigate chronic drainage failures on Brookdale that neighbors say have caused repeated property damage and at least one recent home rescue.

At the podium, Jasmine Ash described a recent storm that sent about four inches of water into her house and required fire department assistance. “This is not a one time event,” Ash said, and added she has documentation—photos, restoration reports and inspection notes—showing the problem predates nearby construction. Ashley Dickerson, who lives at the Brookdale/Maple intersection, gave a detailed description of pipes that “intercept” and a downstream pipe that is too small to handle flows, saying the existing system is “just not adequate enough.”

Council member asked staff for more information about claims that a larger collector pipe is discharging into a smaller downstream line and whether a creek had been altered; the city manager said staff would gather and return that information to council. The city committed to follow up rather than taking immediate action that night; council members and staff acknowledged the problem could cause worse damage if not addressed before a severe storm.
