Smekens spoke on behalf of his family and said he was honored to be chosen: "On behalf of my wife, Damian, and our daughters that are able to be in attendance with us tonight, very honored that you've chosen me to serve you as the corporation superintendent," he said, adding that he was "very excited about the possibilities and opportunities" and was "ready to get to work and get focused on helping our educators." The board welcomed Smekens and expressed eagerness to work with him.
