The Select Board denied a one-time pawnbroker/precious-metal-dealer license application from Cavalier Marketing and Sales LLC of Sutherland, Virginia after staff and the police chief raised concerns about the applicant's operational model and verification challenges.
Police (Chief, speaker 8) said the state requires a holding period for purchased metals and that itinerant operators who collect goods locally and return to another state can frustrate investigations and victim property recovery. The chief told the board that while he found no specific criminal history for the applicant, operating from a motel room and leaving the jurisdiction can limit law enforcement's ability to follow up. "My problem is this group's from Virginia... they spend a day here collecting... then they're gone," the chief said.
Board members discussed local impacts on motel patrons and safety perceptions and ultimately voted to deny the license citing public-safety and verification concerns.
