ComEd representatives said the customer relief fund will prioritize low- and moderate-income households and also provide support for nonprofit organizations that hold past-due balances.
Alyssa Washington described eligibility and grant amounts: “The level that we're looking at is 300% at or below the federal poverty level. Customers can qualify for 1 time grants up to $500 based upon their past due balances. We are also uniquely supporting nonprofit organizations… if they have past due balances, we are also providing 1 time grants up to $1,000.” She added that these grants do not need to be repaid.
Washington said approximately 80% of the fund will be allocated to help low- and moderate-income customers and 20% will go toward nonprofit customers. She also listed existing assistance pathways—LIHEAP referrals, payment-arrangement options that can extend payments over 12 months, waived late-payment charges for eligible customers, and returned deposits where applicable—as complementary tools for residents seeking help.
ComEd staff directed residents to an online portal and enrollment partners after the announcement and said staff and partners at the event would assist with signups.
