The Village of Ford Heights board voted to adopt Ordinance No. 2024-09-04-01 on Sept. 4, implementing a municipal retailers' occupation tax and a municipal service occupation tax. The mayor and trustees discussed that several neighboring municipalities already levy the 1% tax and said exempt categories include groceries and gasoline.
The mayor summarized the rationale: "The only 3 towns around here that does not have the 1 percent," and said attorney Kent Carr recommended the measure for municipal governments. The ordinance was approved on a roll-call vote; the clerk read the ordinance number and confirmed the motion carried. The board did not detail anticipated revenue estimates in the meeting.
