MBTA to pilot two-hour unlimited transfer window to simplify multi-leg trips

Phil Ng described a new two-hour unlimited transfer window that will allow riders to make as many transfers as they need within a two-hour period while paying only the highest fare in that period. The change is intended to make multi-leg trips — for example, bus to subway to ferry — easier and cheaper for riders who run errands or combine trips.
Ng explained the policy works when riders pay using the same tap-and-go media (card or device) so the system can register entry times. "If you're using our subways and buses, use the tap and go, and that will record what time you enter the system," Ng said. Officials said the transfer pilot is part of a six-month trial beginning Sept. 1.
