The Valdosta Mayor and Council voted to transmit the draft 2026 joint comprehensive plan to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for review, a step staff said is required before the plan can be adopted. Matt Martin introduced the item and Amy Martin, senior planner, said the plan is a shared long-range document for Lowes County and multiple municipalities and that the final public hearing is scheduled next week with the county commission.
Amy Martin said the update is required every 10 years under state law and noted why the transmittal matters: "The plan has to be adopted so that you can stay in compliance with your... Qualified Local Government or QLG status, and that helps with grants and funding." After brief questions, a council member moved to advance the plan; the council approved the transmittal by a show of hands. Staff said adoption is anticipated in October once the state completes its review and the participating local governments finalize their letters of support.
