Commission approves porch ceiling replacement at 96 2nd Street with beadboard sample condition

Anne Ferraro asked the commission for permission to replace a deteriorated plaster porch ceiling at her contributing property at 96 2nd Street with beadboard planking. Ferraro said the existing plaster has holes and moisture damage and that local contractors advised beadboard would be a more reliable solution than repairing plaster. "I was advised that to replace that with plaster would be very difficult and there would be no guarantee that that new plaster ceiling would survive," Ferraro said.
Commissioners and staff asked for a sample of the beadboard profile and detail for the transition to the wall; the commission agreed to approve the application at the meeting with the condition that Ferraro provide a beadboard sample and final trim details to the preservation planner for approval. The preservation planner and commissioners noted beadboard comes in a variety of widths and that details such as a cove molding or a specific spacing will be part of the staff review.
The commission moved and seconded the approval with the stated condition and recorded the vote by voice.
