The council passed a resolution officially designating the bridge realignment project parking lot at 80 JT Connell Highway as the "Newport Access Hub." Tully Martin of the Planning Department said staff have contacted signage vendors to develop a planning budget estimate and that the designation will enable production of wayfinding signs and maps linking the lot to downtown by bike, bus and foot.
Councilors debated options for the name, with some preferring simpler alternatives, but the governing body approved the official name and asked staff to report back on signage timing for gateway and directional signs. "We're envisioning a larger name sign ... You can access downtown here by by biking, walking. There's a bus stop. You can park here for free," Tully Martin told the council.
