Resident presents video evidence to oppose Warfield annexation, warns of parking and traffic impacts
Summary
Dwayne Cordray, a Mount Airy resident, urged the council to reject the Warfield annexation, saying a July 17 video shows Patriot’s Park North operating at capacity and warning a proposed complex’s parking and access would replicate that congestion in town.

Dwayne Cordray, a resident of Kings Forest Trail, told the Mount Airy Planning Commission he opposes the Warfield property annexation and urged town council members not to overturn the commission’s earlier recommendation. "I am here to comment on the Warfield annexation," Cordray said, adding that the planning commission had voted "unanimously 6 to 0 to oppose the annexation."
Cordray said he mailed council members a video taken at Patriot's Park North on July 17, around 2:15 p.m., showing heavy congestion as six baseball fields were in use and the lot was full. "The video will show cars trying to get in, trying to get out in its backlog," he said, and reported that one citizen counted about 467 parking spots at that facility. He said the petitioners’ proposal for a new complex (with soccer fields, pickleball courts and other amenities) would generate similar parking and circulation problems near Wattersville Road and in town.
Cordray also criticized what he called unprofessional comments by petitioners at a town council briefing and said he will present more details at the council meeting. The commission did not vote on the annexation at this meeting; Cordray urged council members in attendance to review his video ahead of their hearing.
Next steps: Cordray said he will speak at the council meeting scheduled for Aug. 3; the planning commission closed the public-comment portion of its agenda and proceeded to staff and commission business.
