Council approves no-cost Verigee energy assessment for city facilities

Rochester — The City Council voted July 28 to authorize a no-cost energy assessment offered by Verigee, a private energy services firm, that the presenter said could identify energy-efficiency projects the city could pursue.
Ricky Anderson, Verigee’s representative, told the council the program is enabled by Indiana Code IC 36-1-12.5 and that an initial assessment “does not cost the city anything to do, is an assessment.” Anderson identified wastewater treatment as the largest utility cost and said the firm would review billing information across city facilities and return with recommended projects. After Anderson’s presentation, a motion to proceed with the assessment was made, seconded and approved by voice vote; staff were asked to provide utility account numbers and to coordinate with newly introduced deputy-clerk staff.
Anderson emphasized that any later work would require competitive procurement and that savings guarantees are verified by the state. “These are guaranteed savings projects,” he said, noting prior local examples and that state verification triggers contractor obligations if savings guarantees are not met. Council members asked for follow-up logistics and to limit the initial scope to facilities identified by staff.
