State school‑boards association vote removes president from office; local delegate reports 19–4 outcome

At the Oct. 14 workshop the district’s delegate to the New Jersey School Boards Association reported that the association's board voted to remove its newly seated president, Tammy Smith, from the office of president.
The delegate said the vote was 19 in favor and 4 opposed and described lengthy deliberations guided by the association's officers code of conduct. “Ultimately, we were guided by the New Jersey school board's officers code of conduct and with the best interest of New Jersey school boards and the integrity of our mission at heart,” the delegate said. He also emphasized that the action pertains only to her role in the association: “The board's determination is limited to Mrs. Smith's role as president and a member of the New Jersey School Boards Association board of directors. It does not affect her qualifications for her ability to serve as a member of her local board of education.”
The delegate announced that the immediate past president, Karen Cortelio, will assume the role of president of the association. The delegate also presented a state certificate and a tenure pin to local board member Nick Demczak during the report.
