County engineer reports road project schedule and warns of aggregate shortage

Poweshiek County Engineer Brehm updated the Board of Supervisors on several active road projects. He said work on 100th Street north of 480th Avenue to Ewart Road is intended to start July 27, work is starting on the Grinnell 16th Avenue project, and the bridge project south of Deep River on 520th Avenue is complete and the road is open. Brehm also reported that speed limit signs on affected stretches have been updated from 55 mph to 60 mph.
Brehm warned the board that the county's rock stockpile at the quarry is low, so additional heavy rocking is on hold this construction season. He stated the Malcom quarry does not intend to crush again until November and that access to an adequate aggregate supply has been poor for several years, with material becoming increasingly expensive. The minutes record heavy rock placement on 420th and 370th paid for with TIF funds to build a rock base but note that further heavy rocking is constrained by supply and cost pressures.
