Zoning administrator Dustin Belton described a proposed amendment to the sign code that would allow a maximum sign area of 200 square feet and a maximum height of 85 feet (current limit 35 feet) within 1,000 feet of the Woodlawn overpass. “Maximum sign area shall be limited to 200 square feet… and a maximum sign height shall be 85 feet instead of the 35,” Belton said.
Commissioners noted that a previous 85‑foot exception had been granted for a specific applicant (Casey’s) and stressed the need to evaluate future sign requests individually. One commissioner said the city should not “blanket” the corridor with tall signs and emphasized the importance of reviewing wind loads, footprint and placement during application review. The commission did not adopt any change; members agreed that if the change proceeds it should include site‑specific review criteria and safety/positioning requirements.
