County planner urges more community involvement in Highway 11 safety effort

Charlet (Charly) Hotchkiss, Umatilla County land use planner and transit coordinator, told the council the Highway 11 Safety Committee formed after a December 2023 town hall addressing multiple serious crashes on OR-11 between Milton-Freewater and Stateline. She said funding from the ODOT TSO Safety Grant supports local messaging campaigns and overtime patrols by the Umatilla County Sheriff's Office to reduce serious crashes along the corridor.
Hotchkiss invited residents to attend the committee meetings, which are held the second Tuesday of each month from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Milton-Freewater Police Station, and provided an email and phone contact for adding people to the meeting invite list. Umatilla County Commissioner Cindy Timmons asked whether ODOT had updates on the Highway 11 project; Hotchkiss responded she works for the county and that ODOT will provide project updates when available.
