BZA approves several special‑uses; mine hearing tabled to August

During its July meeting the Warrick County BZA approved five special‑use requests (sports complex renewal, two sign upgrades, a home‑occupation woodworking use, an accessory dwelling unit) and tabled the Stanley Pit mining application to Aug. 24.
The Warrick County Board of Zoning Appeals moved through a series of routine land‑use requests and approved multiple special uses before a lengthy hearing on the Stanley Pit led the board to table that item to the Aug. 24 meeting.
Approvals included: (1) Renewal of a special use for a proposed sports complex on Van Road (applicant: Warrick County Redevelopment Commission represented by Steve Raleigh), approved subject to standard conditions including floodplain and building permits; (2) an electric message sign upgrade for a CNS/Marathon station (Scott Elpers/CNS Inc), approved with restrictions on flashing/moving lights; (3) a home‑occupation woodworking special use for John Schaeffer (no retail sales, no signage); (4) an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) for Megan Hoogsteen—about 900 square feet for family use—approved with occupancy and parking conditions; and (5) First Christian Church of Newburgh’s request to convert a static sign to an electronic message center, approved with permit conditions.
Motions were made, seconded and approved by voice votes recorded in the public meeting. The board did not vote on the Stanley Pit special use; after hearing from the applicant, technical staff and many residents it voted to table the matter so members can review the record and possible permit conditions.
