Assessor outlines difference between valuation and tax collection roles

During a question from a resident about the difference between the county assessor and the treasurer, the Bernalillo County assessor described the two offices' distinct functions. “There is a big distinction between what the county treasurer does and what the county assessor does,” the assessor said. “The county assessor is responsible for the current and correct valuation of all property in the county... On the other hand, the county treasurer is responsible for collecting the taxes and making distributions to all of the taxing entities.”
The assessor added that the assessor's office applies property tax savings programs when appropriate, while the treasurer distributes collected taxes to the state, county, municipalities, school districts and soil and water conservation districts and manages investments of those funds. The remarks were explanatory; no policy changes or formal actions were proposed during the session.
