Staff described the closure as part of a larger state project involving multiple ramps and work over the Little Calumet; they said the city will issue advance notifications and coordinate with Hammond police so freight companies can exit at Kennedy during the closure. "We've been receiving calls from the freight companies that are in that area. How are they gonna get out? We're gonna ask the police to allow them to exit at Kennedy for the 50 days that this is gonna be closed," staff said. A committee member recommended approval and the board concurred.
The board’s approval authorizes the city to provide the required notices and coordinate traffic enforcement and detours; because INDOT is leading the project, final scheduling and work details remain with the state.
