Officials describe cyclospora symptoms, treatment options and who is most at risk

County public-health officials described the illness caused by Cyclospora and who may be at higher risk. "It causes prolonged watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, fatigue, a loss of appetite," Dr. Kanika Cunningham said, listing typical symptoms and advising people to seek medical care if diarrhea lasts more than a couple of days.
Dr. Amanda Brodowski said symptoms often last longer than other common stomach bugs and that some people have been sick for two weeks or more before seeking care. County staff noted an antibiotic is available for treatment and that immunocompromised people who cannot maintain hydration could require hospitalization. Officials urged people who are sick to avoid preparing food for others and to practice hand-washing to prevent potential person-to-person spread (rare but possible).
