Commission President Ziegler and Medical Rescue Team South presented lifesaver awards at the July 28 Mount Lebanon Commission meeting to the patrons, saloon staff and public-safety personnel who helped save a person after a June 12 cardiac arrest at the Mount Lebanon Saloon. Chief David Turkel of Medical Rescue Team South led the presentation and read the recipients' names.
Turkel described how bystanders and staff began CPR and used an automated external defibrillator before emergency crews arrived. "When Mr. Della Pina collapsed, Emma Anderson, a saloon employee, immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation," Turkel said. He credited a combination of early CPR, early defibrillation and coordinated EMS response for restoring a heartbeat before transport to UPMC Presbyterian for specialized cardiac care. Turkel said the incident illustrates the “chain of survival” and noted that the survivor received a commemorative pin from the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association.
Award recipients included the survivor David Della Pina; saloon owner Keith Shepherd; employees Emma Anderson and others; and Mount Lebanon police, fire and EMS personnel. Turkel emphasized that every role — from securing the scene to applying the AED — contributed to the outcome. The commission invited brief remarks from several honorees and acknowledged the event with applause and a photo opportunity. The presentation concluded before the commission moved on to other agenda business.
