Fire Chief Jeremy Haddix told the council that two department personnel were sent down south over the weekend to assist relief efforts following Hurricane Helene. The department is also coordinating local collection points for donations: Vincent Memorial and Freedom Baptist Churches, and Linda Griffith is accepting donations at the Nutter Fort Post Office for a limited time, according to the minutes.
Chief Haddix also reported the Robert C. Byrd High School homecoming parade on Oct. 2 traveled through town and drew large crowds along the route. The minutes record these operational and community-service activities but do not list dollar amounts or the specific supplies being collected for the hurricane response.
