Fire chief: marshland blaze was larger than initial reports; multi-agency response praised

The American Canyon Fire Protection District chief told the board on July 28 that a recent marshland/grass fire that began near Dutch Flat and affected areas around Wetlands Edge and Meadow Bay was larger than early estimates. While initial public messages reported a 5-acre footprint, post-incident mapping increased that figure to about 32.5 acres.
The chief said multiple agencies operated under a unified command structure and that helicopters, mutual-aid engines, drone reconnaissance and local CERT volunteers were important for access, situational awareness and traffic control. He described difficult terrain in marshland areas, noting firefighters worked knee- to mid-thigh deep in water and tules and sometimes used ladders to traverse unstable ground.
The district's PIO, Laura Provencher, was singled out for rapidly compiling and sharing incident information with county OES, the school district and other agencies and for compensating for gaps in other jurisdictions'public-information coverage. The chief and board members praised responders and CERT volunteers for their work and thanked partners who provided aviation, hazmat and drone capabilities.
The chief cautioned that acreage estimates can change as mapping and analysis continue and that evacuations and rescindments are based on rapidly evolving on-scene conditions; he said the incident remained under investigation with no public determination of cause at the time of the meeting.
