City seeks nearly $500,000 to rebuild tennis courts; pickleball inclusion corrected after meeting

Interim City Manager Tim Johnson told the Recreation Committee that the city has submitted grant applications to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department ($400,000), the Sherwood Trust ($75,000) and the Wildhorse Foundation toward a demo-and-rebuild of the Yantis Park tennis courts, a project staff estimated would cost nearly $500,000. The plan is to replace courts in the existing footprint.
During the meeting Mr. Sanchez asked whether pickleball striping would be included; Johnson said at the time that Oregon high school athletics rules would not permit striping both tennis and pickleball on the same courts, and members expressed disappointment and interest in adding separate pickleball courts nearby. A later amendment to the minutes notes staff were informed before an April 21 follow-up that the Oregon State Athletic Association will allow painting both tennis and pickleball lines when the Yantis Park courts are replaced (information attributed to Public Works Technician Steven Patten).
