Residents ask board to notify families about proposed Mount Hope warming shelter near schools

During public comment Katie Gast asked the board to ensure that all parents and guardians at Franklin Elementary and Central High School be notified before a proposed warming shelter at Mount Hope Lutheran Church is finalized. Gast said most families "have not even been made aware of this proposal" and requested timely notification so parents can ask questions or express concerns; she said the church expects its vote on the proposal on Aug. 9 and that the matter will then move to the West Dallas common council.
Cindy Radke also spoke and said she had spoken with neighbors who were unaware of the proposal; she noted her understanding that the school board does not vote on the matter but asked the board to "reflect what the people of West Dallas feel." Radke said the proposed site's proximity to two schools is a concern and that, while such services are needed, a different location might be more appropriate.
