County accepts up to $2.4 million in MEA modernization grants for facility energy projects

The Queen Anne's County commissioners moved and approved executing local government energy modernization program grant agreements with the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) for up to $2,414,000 in FY26 funding. Staff said the award would be for two areas of interest: general energy efficiency/clean energy (90% reimbursement with a 10% match) and projects focused on electrification and equipment. Chief Engineer Lee Edgar explained that the county submitted conceptual proposals and estimated potential awards at just under $1,000,000 for the efficiency category and $1,300,000 for electrification projects.
Projects named in the presentation included equipment and heat pumps at the Department of Public Works, Graysonville Senior Center, the Health Department, the Liberty Building, and the Foxtown Senior Center. Edgar emphasized the grants fund design as well as installation and said the county would not be obligated to proceed with individual projects if the design phase showed they were impractical. "If it does not make sense, we will not do it," Edgar said, describing built‑in flexibility and the ability to forfeit individual awards without penalty. The motion to execute the agreements passed on a voice vote.
