Council approves new "Project Identification" sign type for large commercial developments

The Pleasant Grove City Council approved an amendment to the sign code on May 6 that creates a new "Project Identification Sign" category for master-planned commercial developments.
Community Development Director Daniel Cardenas explained the new sign type is intended for unified commercial developments of at least 20 acres and will be limited to one sign per development; the maximum dimensions discussed were 12 feet in height or roughly 200 square feet. Director Cardenas said the provision targets commercial development and will not apply to residential areas. Applicant representative Marty Beaumont described landscaping around the planned monument on Pleasant Grove Boulevard and said the sign is intended to "finish off the corner" for Valley Grove Phase 6. Council members stressed the importance of design standards and said they do not want a large concrete mass at a principal city entrance.
The ordinance requires design approval and engineering review for sign placement and massing; staff told Council the number of potential qualifying sites in the city is likely small given the 20-acre minimum. The Council voted unanimously to adopt Ordinance 2025-007.
