Residents urge pause on Cape Coral 'Flock' cameras; council seeks police briefing

Marr asked directly whether "the residents of Cape Coral ever vote to approve the installation of these 58 surveillance cameras" and said, "If the answer is no, then 245,000 residents are living under a citywide surveillance system that was never directly approved by the people." He asked the council to "temporarily suspend the operation of the flock cameras until the city council holds a public meeting dedicated exclusively to this issue, followed by a public vote or another meaningful process."
Council member Lastra said she would meet with the chief of police to get educated on whether those devices are equivalent to license‑plate‑recognition (LPR) cameras and how they're used; she noted that LPRs have been in the city for about ten years and credited them with helping locate missing persons. Council member Kaduk said she had asked when the cameras were authorized and reported her understanding that authorization occurred in 2024 with implementation in 2025; she said she would provide the exact resolution once located.
No immediate policy change was made on July 15; council members said they would follow up with law enforcement and share the authorizing resolution when it is confirmed.
