Beecher, school district discuss shifting SRO costs as district seeks lower share

Chief Terry Lemming and Administrator Charity Mitchell briefed the board on discussions with School Superintendent Gaham about the village's School Resource Officer (SRO) program. The district indicated it wants to continue the SRO but to pay 50% of costs in the future rather than the current 75% share. The superintendent also indicated the district may not want the SRO to perform teaching duties in the school.
Chief Lemming recommended amending the agreement to state that overtime hours for school events would be paid by the school or that officer schedules be adjusted so overtime is minimized. Board members discussed a potential 60/40 split as an intermediate approach and asked the Public Safety Committee to meet with the district to negotiate terms. The board did not take a final vote on the program at the Jan. 13 meeting.
