Several nonprofit and civic leaders urged council to approve the proposed hospitality-tax increase as a targeted funding source for parks, greenways and tourism-driven events. Walter Clifford of Aiken Football Club said tournaments bring hundreds of visiting athletes and families whose spending supports local restaurants and lodging. "These events bring hundreds of athletes and their families, to our community, generating significant economic activity for local establishments," Clifford said.
Peter Kleinhenz of Aiken Land Conservancy told council that hospitality-tax proceeds could help protect and link public conservation assets, naming the Carolina Bay Nature Preserve and proposing a greenway between Shaws Creek Preserve and Generations Park. Supporters said strategic investments can attract off-peak events and increase hotel nights without raising property taxes.
