Selectboard receives $191,496 paving grant; bid opening shows Whitcomb lowest on option 2

The Fairfield Selectboard on May 11 confirmed receipt of a $191,496 paving grant from the Vermont Agency of Transportation and opened contractor bids for the grant-funded paving work. Town Administrator Cathy Ainsworth presented the Invitation to Bid; Selectboard member David Persons read the bids, with Whitcomb submitting $313,305.72 ($88.28/ton, 3,549 tons) as the apparent low bid.
Other bids for Project Option 2 were SD Ireland $332,010.00 ($93/ton, 3,570 tons); Hungerford $325,956.00 ($92/ton, 3,543 tons); Pike $320,916.60 ($88.70/ton, 3,618 tons); and AllStates $393,955.50 ($109.25/ton, 3,606 tons). David Davio of Pike Industries reminded the board that Pike warranties its work for one year. The board did not award the contract at the meeting; bids will be fully reviewed and any award will be made at a subsequent Selectboard meeting.
The grant will fund paving to occur this summer, Ainsworth said, and the Selectboard asked staff to verify bid compliance, bonding, and insurance before issuing an award. The board approved the minutes and conducted other business during the meeting, but left final selection to allow time for vetting the bids and confirming grant conditions.
