City Manager Dennis Barstow and council members presented retiring Wichita Fire Chief Tammy Snow with the key to the city in a public recognition during the council workshop.
Barstow praised Snow’s nearly four decades of public service and highlighted her work on training, employee wellness programs and community partnerships that strengthened the department. Council Member Becky Tuttle said Snow is “a transformative figure in the firefighting community” and noted that Snow appears in a book titled Fire Service Leaders Who Happen to Be Women.
“Chief, we want to thank you for your 4 decades of service to the city of Wichita,” Barstow said during the presentation. Snow accepted the honor and, visibly emotional, thanked council, her family and department staff. “I am truly humbled and deeply honored to accept the key to the city of Wichita,” Snow said, adding that the recognition belongs to her family and the Wichita Fire Department personnel who supported her across a 38-year career.
Snow’s remarks recalled department initiatives she helped lead, including efforts to establish a state official memorial for fallen firefighters and to improve firefighter health and safety. Councilors said the recognition was intended to record Snow’s contributions on the public record and allow the broader community to share the moment.
