Residents question water-rate notices, park metering and long-standing leak at Cairo meeting

During the public-comment portion of the Town Board meeting on Aug. 4, 2025 several residents raised concerns about water billing and infrastructure.
A resident identified as Anna said that recently mailed water-rate notices contained incorrect numbers and mentioned a water tower near a local landmark that is "constantly letting out water." A. Carr asked who pays for the water used during park events, saying the spigots at the park are not metered; Board members replied that the Town pays for water usage in the park. Another commenter, L. Asaro, raised a years-long leak at Shingle Kill Creek near the bridge; the Supervisor said the Water Department has been aware of the issue. T. Powers asked why there had not been a public hearing on rate changes; the Board said rates were discussed in a May 5 presentation and other meetings noted on the agenda.
Board members explained that rate increases are needed to fund pipeline maintenance, water-main repairs and equipment updates. The Board said a corrected notice would be posted and that the Water Department handles its own customer notifications.
