Cairo schedules public hearing on proposed six-month moratorium for residential battery storage

The Cairo Town Board on Aug. 4, 2025 authorized a public hearing for Aug. 20, 2025 to receive comment on a proposed six-month moratorium on residential battery storage facilities (Resolution No. 2025-164).
Board members said they do not want a residential battery storage facility in town "for multiple reasons," including concerns that a fire at such a facility could exceed the capacity of the town’s fire department and neighboring departments. The resolution sets the public hearing date and directs the Board to accept public comment as part of the record.
The moratorium would pause new residential battery storage installations while the town considers safety, zoning and emergency-response implications. The Board’s action is procedural (scheduling a hearing) rather than a final adoption of the moratorium; the public hearing on Aug. 20 will be the next formal step.
