World Food Programme asks roughly $75 million for logistics and food for Ebola response

Carl Skow, acting executive director of the World Food Programme, said WFP is seeking funds specifically for logistics and food to support the Ebola response and named an ask of about $76,000,000 for logistics, warehousing, air services and food deliveries. "What I do know is $76,000,000 is our ask to provide logistics ... and the food for this Ebola response," he said.
Skow also said a short time later that the ask was "$75,000,000," reflecting a minor inconsistency in the briefing text; he emphasized that some logistics components have been partly funded but that the food element has so far been unfunded. He described WFP operations delivering planes, helicopters, hot meals for patients and rations to isolated families, and said WFP has provided about 160,000 hot meals and food parcels to roughly 20,000 affected families so far.
Skow characterized the funding need as modest relative to the stakes and warned of risks that the epidemic could spread beyond current local containment if resources are not increased. "It's frankly just peanuts if you look at the bigger scheme of things," he said.
