Commission discusses Future Land Use Map, utilities and possible commercial growth areas

At the June 9 meeting the Jerome City Planning & Zoning Commission and staff discussed updates to the Future Land Use Map (FLUM) and longer-range planning priorities.
City Planner Ida Clark said staff met recently with City Council and emphasized that the FLUM is a living document used to guide where utilities and future development should occur. Commissioners raised immediate utility constraints: sewer lines near capacity in parts of the city and localized water-pressure issues. Commissioners and staff discussed possible changes to the map — including shifting some areas near Ritch Thompson from industrial to commercial uses, expanding commercial nodes toward the interstate and East Main, and adding agricultural-transition areas that can become residential as utilities are extended.
The group also discussed amenities and open-space planning: proposals included adding a dog park near 100 West by the wastewater plant and adding smaller neighborhood parks as the city grows. Commissioner Benjamin Reed praised staff for proactively addressing future infrastructure needs. The discussion ended with direction for staff to continue coordination with Council and Public Works on the FLUM and infrastructure planning.
