County places no-wake buoys after discovery of more than 2,700 grebe nests in South Lakeport
Summary
The chair said Water Resources and partners quickly installed no-wake buoys in South Lakeport to protect more than 2,700 recently discovered grebe nests; the buoys establish a slow no-wake zone to reduce wave damage to floating tule nests.

The chair told the board that Water Resources mobilized rapidly to place no-wake buoys in an area of South Lakeport after discovery of more than 2,700 grebe nests.
"...we have over 2,700 grebe nests that were just recently discovered... The way these grebes nest is they build a floating nest out of tules, and they're vulnerable to wave action. They can be destroyed by wave action. So that's why these buoys are critical for a slow no wake zone," the chair said.
The chair credited Water Resources and Red Bud Audubon for monitoring and notifying the county and said those buoys were originally funded about 15 years ago. The buoys are intended to keep boats at a distance from the nesting colony to reduce wave impacts and predation risk to eggs; the board did not record a formal regulatory change at this meeting beyond the placement of buoys.
