Alliant told the Lake County Board the Prism Health Committee made a program‑wide decision to stop covering GLP‑1 weight‑loss medications starting Jan. 1, citing tens of millions of dollars in pharmacy spend across the Prism pool. Tom Shear said the pool’s original proposed increase was nearly 16%, and removing GLP‑1 coverage brought the program renewal down to about 10.7%.
Shear described the decision as difficult because GLP‑1 drugs have significant clinical benefits for some patients, but he said the committee concluded the program’s rapid GLP‑1 uptake was unsustainable. "There were tens of millions of dollars being spent across the program for thousands of people on weight loss," he said. Alliant and county staff said affected employees will still have referrals and resources for weight‑loss management through vendors such as Digby and direct‑to‑consumer options referenced in the presentation.
The presenters emphasized tradeoffs: removing coverage lowers premiums but reduces an access option for some staff. Board members and several callers urged that alternatives and targeted support be explored before the benefit is fully removed.
