MCPS to launch regional high school model for rising 9th graders in 2027

Montgomery County Public Schools will roll out a regional high school model beginning with the class entering 9th grade in 2027-28, expanding seats and standardizing programs across six county regions while phasing out the consortia school-choice model over a multi-year transition.
Montgomery County Public Schools staff told families that the district will shift from countywide magnet and consortia models to a regional high school structure, starting with students who are now in 7th grade and will enter 9th grade in the 2027-28 school year. "By moving to a regional model ... there'll be more opportunities to make for students to make a match between their interests and specialization and the seats that we have available," said Ebony Lankford Brown, director, during the presentation.
District staff framed the change as a way to expand capacity: they said roughly 3,000 students currently apply to countywide programs while the county offers about 300 seats. The district described a phased roll-out with a three-year overlap so students already enrolled in existing magnet programs can continue; final implementation without overlap is projected for school year 2030-31. Presenter Peter Orstrander (introduced at the session) and other staff said the regional structure divides the county into six regions, each hosting pathways in multiple theme areas so that most students will still attend their home high school but may apply to programs hosted within their assigned region.
