Recreation staff (Erica) told the board that summer-program enrollment has declined in recent years and that last summer the rec program had roughly 45 registrations with daily attendance typically below 30. She proposed restructuring summer offerings into smaller, themed camps (one athletic-focused and one non-athletic each week) to provide more structured content and keep costs down.
Erica said, "This past year, I had roughly 45 kids register. However, it wasn't any on, on any given day, we had more than 30 in attendance." She recommended tailoring camp weeks (for example a STEM week alongside a sports clinic) and reducing expensive field trips to control costs; the board discussed reallocating $1,500 for community events and maintaining uniforms/equipment lines (an initial uniform estimate of about $6,200 was discussed). The board also noted rent-to-own storage containers are in year two of a three-year agreement and encouraged better shelving to store equipment.
The board approved modest reallocations to support community events and discussed fundraising and sponsorship options to cover larger equipment purchases. Recreation staff will refine program plans and present a final summer schedule and cost estimates at a future meeting.
