The council voted to adopt a resolution supporting a VDOT Smart Scale grant application for the Lou DeWitt pedestrian project, which staff said would construct roughly 2,700 linear feet of five-foot sidewalk along the west side of Lou DeWitt from West Main Street to Shepherd Court, plus curb ramp upgrades and a high-visibility pedestrian crossing.
Director of Community Development (Miss Tate) described the project as a way to fill sidewalk gaps and tie into other pedestrian improvements. Miss Tate cautioned that the full-length project could be expensive and that VDOT recommended scaling back the project to improve scoring; she said the scaled-back section (West Main to Shepherd) could be more competitive. "They’re very expensive, over $23,000,000 projects," Miss Tate said when discussing costs in the larger pipeline, and she offered to provide specific cost estimates after the meeting. A resolution of council support passed with an abstention from a member who disclosed VDOT employment.
