Board hears KASB legislative priorities: vouchers, tax credits, and Education Savings Accounts highlighted

At the Jan. 13 meeting Kevin Cole provided the board with a KASB and legislative update, noting state legislators had reconvened and that proposed items likely to affect schools this year include vouchers, tax credits and Education Savings Accounts. Cole told the board the State Board of Education has recommended an additional $87.5 million over the next three years, a proposal he said will face difficulty given the expanded legislative supermajority.
Cole also alerted the board to KASB events and trainings: a lunch-and-learn on teacher retention, a board meeting in Topeka, and an Advocacy and Equity event in Washington, D.C., scheduled Feb. 1–4. He said the KASB Board and executive team will visit USD 506 on March 7 to showcase the district.
