Superintendent: county stops ACH processing; district must open bank account, and other administrative updates

During the Nov. 18 meeting Superintendent Becky Bell reported several administrative items that require action by the district.
Bell said the San Juan County Treasurer’s Office will no longer process the district’s ACH/EFT employee benefit payments beginning Jan. 1, 2026, and the district therefore must open its own bank account. She said Kara Moore from NWESD 189 is researching cost‑free bank account options and that Dr. Bell and Moore would be on the account. The board will take additional administrative steps to establish banking and payroll arrangements in time for the January change.
Bell also proposed holding a board retreat in January or February to bring the newly constituted board together rather than sending directors to the Washington State School Directors' Association conference; a date will be set at the December meeting and the NWESD 189 superintendent (Dr. Ishmael Vivanco) or another staff member is expected to host the retreat. Bell outlined a planned spirit‑wear sale using a schoolhouse design created by former student Sintayehu Shannon; the sales platform would be time‑limited and not set up as a school fundraiser, though the Shaw School Foundation may run separate fundraising efforts at a school kiosk in the future.
On special education screening, Bell said the district completed Child Find screening for students up to age 22, contracted with Next Level Speech for some screening work, and is working on a follow‑up contract with Dr. Kopet, a school/clinical psychologist, for evaluations if needed. Bell also reported that school counselor Brian Kremps had visited the school.
