Board authorizes $50,000 contingency, approves two change orders for Shaw Island teacher housing

The Shaw Island School District Board of Directors on Feb. 10 approved two change orders for the district’s teacher housing project and granted Superintendent Becky Bell up to $50,000 in contingency authority to address future change orders. Directors voted unanimously to authorize the superintendent to use the contingency at her discretion to ensure timely approvals during construction work.

The board approved a $3,413.03 change order to add conduit in the power trench and a $1,516.90 change order to add a bury box outside the structure for a second-dwelling tie-in, together totaling $4,929.93. Director Jon Shannon moved to approve both change orders and Director Carol Criss seconded; the motion carried unanimously. Superintendent Becky Bell said she would issue an updated message to the community about the project. Bell also reported Project Manager John Bingham told her he would be “re-retiring” and could no longer provide project management support; architect Philip Burkhardt (PBW Architects) agreed to review invoices under PBW’s existing contract. Burkhardt attended this portion of the meeting via Zoom and left after item 5.1.
