Engineer warns of aging bridges; board approves two bridge replacement contracts

Mike Hackett, Madison County Secondary Roads Engineer, told supervisors the county found a failed wooden bearing member on a bridge on Limestone Avenue and plans temporary cribbing and a repair attempt in October to avoid a long-term closure.
Hackett said the county awarded two bridge replacement contracts after competitive bidding: Herberger Construction of Indianola for $1,756,541.39 and Gus Construction of Casey for $1,050,911.33. "This bridge needs to be replaced," Hackett said, noting many county structures were nearing the end of their service life. Supervisors asked staff to try to coordinate both projects to secure better pricing and minimize disruption.
Hackett also reported routine maintenance projects (culverts, lane closures, resurfacing and dust control) and said the department will bring a formal report on planned speed-limit reviews. The board approved the contract awards and several temporary lane and bridge closures by voice votes.
